Background:

As society becomes more and more entangled with rapidly emerging technologies, the traditional methods of city making are evolving. Urban development schemes are no longer strictly about formal gestures, they become more informed by shaping networks. Further, as new systems emerge, how can urban designers, planners, architects, and landscape practices engage with these forms of 'coding' spatial formations?

Jason Hilgefort will use his projects in the Greater Bay Area to share the way his practice Land+Civilization Compositions continues to leverage design thinking within standard notions of development and seek to generate new potentials for spatial practice. Referencing urban developments in Shenzhen, parks in Dongguan, community engagement works in Hong Kong, and research projects in east Asia; he will reflect on the role of heritage, ideas of nature, food networks, emergent infrastructures and ideas of 'development as an export model'.
