Background:

The webinar will explore the implication of culturally significant crafted arts in architecture; and specifically, through the case study of the headquarters of the Czech-based bohemian glass and lighting design company Lasvit. As one of the traditionally crafted arts in Czech, the art of hand-crafted glass, like many cultural practices across the world is in the process of transformation into the contemporary context through the fusion of tradition and innovation.

Czech Republic, a country with a rich cultural background, shares similar challenges with Macau in the conversations between the historic and the contemporary. The Lasvit headquarter project by the architects at the Czech-based studio OV-A co-founded by Jiří Opočenský and Štěpán Valouch, is situated on a site that is preceded by a historic glassmaking school, which entails both restoration and implication of architecture - a prime example of the coexistence of old and new. The successful case of Lasvit Headquarters could offer valuable insight in the subject of restoration approach and initiative in Macau.

The webinar will be divided into two parts. The historic significance, innovative techniques and applications of hand-crafted bohemian glass in Czech will be presented by art director of Lasvit Maxim Velčovský, followed by a case study of the Lasvit Headquarters: adaptive reuse and architectural spatialization in synthesizing a tradition of culture and the fabric of architecture presented by the co-founder of OV-A Architects Štěpán Valouch.
