Course Background:
What is heritage? How do we decide what is cultural heritage? Why and how do we take care of our heritage? One must know the answers to these fundamental questions before making decisions that may change the legacy of our cultural expressions significantly and often permanently. Simple as it may seem, the answers require one to understand the complex processes through which cultures are formed and expressed. While basic architecture training enables architects to appreciate the physical and artistic expressions of cultures in general โ and much of our cultural heritage is about the built environment โ it is far from adequate to meet the professional competencies needed for complete care of cultural heritage.
This talk focuses on these fundamental questions and, by presenting the recently published UNESCO document on professional competence for cultural heritage professionals, discusses how architects can leverage and supplement their professional knowledge to make meaningful contributions to cultural heritage conservation. Examples of international and regional best practices will be presented as a part of the discussion.
