Course Background:
Designed by Rocco Design Architects Associates Limited, the recently opened Hong Kong Palace Museum is an important art and cultural facility situated in the West Kowloon Cultural District, Hong Kong. The museum occupies a site of approximately 13,000 square metres with a total floor area of about 30,000 square metres providing 7,800 square metres of exhibition spaces. It has nine exhibition galleries dedicated to gold, bronze and jade items, paintings, and ceramic objects, as well as displays on life in the Imperial Court. Other museum facilities include a 400-seat lecture theatre, activity rooms, restaurant and shops, etc.
Based around a contemporary interpretation of classic Chinese visual and spatial aesthetics, the museum design builds on a concept of linked courtyards translated into a vertical series of atriums that draw the visitor upwards. Located adjacent to the Art Park and facing Victoria Harbour, the Hong Kong Palace Museum will provide a distinctive cultural bookend to the District at its western end. The lecture will discuss on the design development of the Museum and the ideas behind the various spatial concepts.
