Solo Photography Exhibition by Ar. Francisco Ricarte
CPD 1 - "The Architectural Legacy of Master Raul Chorรฃo Ramalho in Macau"
Master Chorรฃo Ramalho (1914-2022) considered one of the most representative Portuguese modernist architects of the second half of the twentieth century, with work built in mainland Portugal, the Azores and Madeira Islands, Macau and Brazil.
This architect developed four projects for Macau in the 1960s, all of which were built and are still admired for their beautiful and coherent architecture.
His architecture, with a firm modernist trait, multifaceted but coherent, incorporated all modern teachings (since before Chapelle Notre-Dame du Haut), functionality and poetics, skillful handling and good application of materials.
In the buildings he designed for Macau, his architecture had already ventured into the realms of Brutalism and anticipated so many ecological conceptsโwhich were very well applied in design and construction.
This architectโwho never lived in Macauโnevertheless had a deep knowledge of Macau's climate mechanisms and the value of urban or natural insertion of the buildings he designed.
The Escola Comercial Pedro Nolasco (today the EPM- Portuguese School of Macau); Infantรกrio Ave Maria (Nursery in the Guia Hill, Rampa do Padre Vasconcelos, No. 7, today Kai Chi School); the "Sap Sรกm Chang Lao" Tower for municipal employees, on Ave do Sidรณnio Paรญs: and finally the houses on Ave Coronel Mesquita (one of them being the headquarters of the Architects Association of Macau - AAM, until March 2024) all on the Macau Peninsula, will be the subject of study in this lecture promoted by AAM.
