Background:
The revitalization of historical buildings is a special aspect of architectural design. It does not only entail preservation, restoration, and the display of historical buildings, but also the creation, arrangement, application of new functions, and to exercise infinite imagination within a finite space. How should we deal with the dilemma of tradition and innovation?
Historic buildings populate the cityscape of Macao. However, due to various reasons, the historical buildings are slowly being abandoned, and the memories carried with them gradually disappear. Therefore, the revitalization of historical buildings is crucial with great significance; not only does it retain architectures that are on the brink of disappearing, but also provides an opportunity for the people to connect the past and the present through its new purpose.
In the process of revitalizing historical buildings, we are not striving for extremes, but a balance point – a balance point between tradition and innovation. In this CPD, we are going to discuss various topics such as involving tradition and innovation, essence and space, respect and adjustment by introducing several ideas in the revitalization of historical buildings. Four projects that have been successfully implemented will be presented as case studies; including the Red Market Library, Guia Fortress Information Centre, Navy Yard, and Patane Library; to further access the feasibility and implementation of the ideas.
